The meiofauna (microscopic, multicellular animals) in sediments and upon surfaces of marine plants were described and quantified in a previously unstudied system. Fundamental rules governing animal assemblages were assessed by manipulative field experiments. The outcomes elucidated some of the ecological controls over these diverse and abundant animals in the mangroves of the Barwon estuary
