Summary |
"Australian studies suggest that the prevalence of diabetes has more than doubled over the past 20 years. Four per cent of Australia's population - around one million people - now have diabetes. This is expected to reach 10 per cent by 2010. Indigenous Australians experience higher prevalence rates of diabetes and related risk factors and complications, and develop diabetes at an earlier age than the non-Aboriginal population. The overall prevalence of diabetes among Aboriginal adults is at least two to four times that of the non-Aboriginal population. Australians living in rural and remote areas have been shown to have higher rates of risk factors and mortality from diabetes than their metropolitan counterparts. In 2004-05, it was found that death rates due to diabetes were signifiicantly higher in all regionals areas. Detection and management of diabetes is much harder in regional and remote areas for many reasons : a lack of local specialists; most rural health clinics and centres do not have comprehensive screening programs; diabetic sufferers face far more travel, time and cost pressures; and the limited health resources in regional areas are concentrated on the people already known to have diabetes. This program will explore the treatment and management of diabetes in rural and remote Australia. The context is explored through four case studies, developed by the Menzies School of Health Research. The case studies highlight a variety of special circumstances, including pregnancey, older age, and co-morbidity."--Container |
