Summary The Altona study site had mild hydrodynamics, dense populations of predators and competitors of abalone, a low biomass of algae known to be preferred by abalone, and high seasonal sedimentation rate. Growth and mortality of hatchery juvenile abalone was found to be marginally viable for commercial abalone ranching
