Summary |
This report analyses the management practices of more than 100 firms currently working in the Australian construction industry. In doing so, it presents some factual information as to: how the industry perceives its own management practices compared to best practice; how widely best practices have been adopted throughout the construction industry; whether the adoption of best practice is reflected in overall business performance; and, whether the industry is developing skills which can contribute to world class performance. Given the best practice theme underpinning this publication, it is recommended this report be read as a companion document to CIDA's 'Building Best Practice in the Construction Industry: a Practitioner's Guide'. The report is in several sections: 1. Section I summarises the key results and survey methodology . 2. Section 11 profiles the management practices of respondent firms focusing on: attitudes towards quality and customers; strategic and business planning approaches; how firms interact with their workforce; how firms interact with their suppliers; factors considered important to competitive strategies; and, the methods firms use to assess their performance. 3. Section 111 discusses the degree to which executives are dissatisfied with current management practices in their firms. It also objectively assesses current policies against best practice. 4. Section IV presents a profile and analysis of the consultant, contractor and subcontractor firms which responded to the survey |
