Incorporating selective papers from a successful conference organized at the University of Stirling in October 1997 by The Polish Society, this book presents challenging and frequently revisionist views on a variety of central and controversial topics relating to the history of the inter-war Polish Republic. The essays analyse its historiography; its bitter dispute with Germany over the region of Upper Silesia in the early post-war years; its sense of national identity and the attitudes of its large ethnic minorities, notably the Ukrainians, Germans and Jews; the significance of the famous Polish victory over the Red Army at the Battle of Warsaw in 1920; the role of the press and its relationship with government; and the nature and extent of its defence preparations on the eve of the Second World War |
