Summary |
In March 1868, a mentally disturbed Irish-born Australian shot and wounded Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, at a picnic on Sydney harbour. His assassin, Henry James O'Farrell, claimed to be a Fenian and his shots resounded around Australia as a torrent of violent and irrational anti-Irish hatred spread through a colony, already tense and nervous about reports of Fenian terrorism in England. Who were the Fenian and were they planning on waging their war in the British Colonies? They were a group of revolutionary Irish democrats dedicated to the overthrow of British rule in Ireland and it is hardly surprising that they drew their supporters from the radical Irish and Australian-born colonists who opposed imperial rule in Ireland. Their detractors, the ruling clique of arch conservative Anglo Saxon protestants, saw them as a threat to the status quo. This book focuses on the attempted assassination and the arrival in the same year of 62 Fenian convicts in Western Australia. The Fenian furore in New South Wales and the dramatic escape from Fremantle to America of several Fenian convicts has been well documents. But the purpose of this book is to place these and other episodes in the broad context of their Irish, English, American and Australian backgrounds. It provides new insights into the Fenians and an international dimension into this exciting chapter of Australian history. (Inside cover) |
