In Tahiti, in 1891, Henry Adams wrote down the national traditions related to him by Queen Marau and the old chiefess Hinarii (Arii Taimai), later issuing a volume entitled Memoirs of Marau Taaroa, last queen of Tahiti ([S.l] : priv. print., 1893), two copies of which are in the library of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Subsequently developing the history of Tahiti, Adams compiled the present work, a combination of certain chapters and sections from both sets of memoirs |
