Summary Rolling gently under billowing canvas, the Discovery, the ship of the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition, set out for the forbidding coast of Antarctica on a voyage of exploration and scientific research under the leadership of Sir Douglas Mawson. On board was Harold Fletcher, 26-year-old assistant zoologist, who looked forward with excitement to this voyage into the unknown and had decided to keep a diary, recording the adventures to come. The world was in the grip of the Great Depression when the Mawson expedition made its two important voyagesduring the summer months of 1929-30 and 1930-31. The expedition, struggling with mountainous seas, deadly pack-ice and bitter cold, explored over 3000 kilometers of unmapped coastline of what is now known as the Australian Antarctic Territory, also charting the ocean floor and observing the fascinating land and marine life. On two occasions it met with Norwegian explorers, and a race developed for Antarctic lands. Harold Fletcher's diaries, day-by-day accounts of both voyages, provide the basis for this compelling book, which for the first time tells the full story of the BANZARE expedition. Maps and many of the original expidition photographs illustrate his vivdly detailed account of his days with Mawson, and of the heroism and determination of his colleagues as they faced danger adn deprivation in their bid to conquer new lands. -- Cover
