Summary Dreamers, Visionaries, and Revolutionaries in the Life Sciences explores biologists who had grand ideas that went beyond the "run of the mill" science of their peers. Each of the eighteen figures featured in the book espoused science that was visionary, often threatening and destabilizing, sometimes fantastical or even quixotic. We argue that "dreamers" imagine and articulate newness: theories, models, methods, practices, or applications of science that represent changes of kind, not just degree. These changes are not revisions or refinements of an existing feature of a field; they are original additions that extend beyond what had constituted the boundary of the field, and are often the result of making daring, surprising connections between hitherto separate spheres. Novelty need not arrive to extricate a scientific community from a dead end, necessarily, or otherwise represent advances in the social relations of science. The wellspring of deep change is more pluralistic and more exciting than envisioned by Kuhn, and can only be excavated through careful contextual histories. Dreamers are a small minority of scientists and they are often perceived as radical, visionary, even revolutionary, exciting reactions spanning the gamut from ridicule to amazement, disbelief to ire
