Tim, an amateur geologist, Janey his blind sister, and their father, a botanist, visit a lonely island off the Scottish coast to hunt for a rare orchid. When Tim finds a large ruby in a cave the family become involved with lonely ten-year-old Perdita who lives on the island, and the mysterious men who refuse to allow her to go to school so that she will not be able to read and thus learn that they are criminals
