Summary |
Engineer and eco-warrior Dick Strawbridge challenges a team of modern-day engineers to rebuild and improve some of history's most impressive machines using their 21st century knowledge. Ancient genius is revealed and modern ingenuity tested as the team works on a medieval machine gun, a Roman war machine, a Byzantine fire boat, a Gothic mega crane and Churchill's rocket parachute.Strawbridge presents the series and acts as ringmaster at build headquarters. Once proceedings are under way, he uses spectacular CGI to explore the original machines and reveal how they changed history. Meanwhile, the engineers grapple with historical blueprints, original building materials and whatever modern insights they can bring to the challenges.Strawbridge tasks the team with building a Medieval Machine Gun known as a Ribauldequin. The first ever multi-barrelled gun, it could pump out walls of lead that could rip through armour and repel wave after wave of attacking knights. The toughest and most dangerous part of the re-build is casting the barrels and dealing with molten bronze in excess of a thousand degrees centigrade. But they are also making bullets and playing with gunpowder. (Documentary Series) (Part 1 of 5) (From England, in English) CCFollow the conversation on Twitter #SBSdoco |
