Summary There is no doubt that the availability and quality of human capital is playing an increasingly important role in the competitiveness of a country or an individual company. The stock of human capital can be traced back to private as well as company or state investments in education, but these are all very largely shaped by the institutional framework of the national education systems. Against this background, at its 26th annual conference, which took place in March 2001 at the Institute for Labor Law and Industrial Relations in the European Community in Trier, the Education Economics Committee analyzed national education systems and their repercussions on company education and employment strategies as well as individual willingness to participate in company training courses in an international comparison. On the one hand, the authors consider the education system in Germany or a foreign education system in order to derive indirect conclusions about the influence of institutional framework conditions. On the other hand, classic international comparisons are made, which compare the educational and employment practices in two countries under controlled conditions with the help of quasi-experimental research designs and thus attempt to directly prove the connection between company strategies and institutional framework conditions. The essays range from purely theoretical analyzes based on formal models on the one hand to empirical analyzes based on sophisticated econometric procedures on the other
