Summary |
"Reported here is an experimental study of alcohol and caffeine effects. The results of the experiment are evaluated in terms of, and co-ordinated with, the findings of previous investigators. This was a large experiment, in more than one respect. It included a sizable number of psychological tests, representing many and varied psychological functions. The introduction of a variety of procedures designed to eliminate or at least to regulate error made for a complex experiment. Because of the care that went into its design and execution, and because of its magnitude and scope, the present experiment provides a suitable framework around which to integrate the earlier experimental work on alcohol and caffeine. This report is not, however, meant to include a complete review of the literature; the present discussion considers only those earlier findings pertinent to the functions investigated here. The sections of the report follow one another in a logical order, but readers may wish to take some liberties with the order in which sections are read. Thus, Parts III and IV as well as Appendix A--these sections develop certain general implications of the findings--might well be perused after the first two chapters have been read. Reading might then be resumed with Chapter 4. Chapter 3--which describes the test procedures--can be treated as a reference section and skipped over; it can then be referred to when particular tests are discussed in later chapters. By organizing his reading along lines such as these, even the reader having little familiarity with studies of drug effects on psychological functions may derive appreciable benefit from the report"--Book.
