Summary William Hogarth - painter, print-maker, pictorial satirist, social critic and editorial - has been credited with pioneering Western sequential art. In this film, Andrew Graham-Dixon explores Hogarth's London and recounts the life of a man regarded as the forerunner of modern caricature. William Hogarth reveals that much of his work, though at times vicious, poked fun at contemporary politics and customs. His picture series of moral works, including: A harlot's progress and A rake's progress, denounce the social and political injustices of his time with original genius. Often pirated, Hogarth also fought hard for the first image copyright law in an age when artwork became increasingly commercialized. Together with illustrators and writers, William Hogarth examines how his satirical engravings are widely seen as the precursor to the modern comic strip
