Summary "On 6 June 1859, Queen Victoria signed the Letters of Patent creating the new and separate colony of Queensland. The inaugural Governor, Sir George Ferguson Brown, was sworn in and the colony founded on 10 December 1859. Queensland was the only Australian colony to begin with two houses of Parliament. In July 1862, the Queensland Legislature passed the 'Coolie Act', making provision for the introduction of labourers from British India into Queensland for cotton growing. However, despite repeated attempts by the Queensland government, it was unable to gain sanction of the Indian government to permit the emigration of its coolies and the proposal lapsed. Thirteen months later, Robert Towns imported the first Pacific Islanders into the colony. It was the beginning of the Queensland labour trade, which would lead to establishment of a viable sugar industry and involve the importation of more than 62,000 Kanaka labourers over the next forty-one years. The book is a factual account of one aspect of the trade; the recruiting and blackbirding of the Islanders. It tells of kidnappings, murders and massacres and bloody reprisals carried out by both sides." -- Back cover
