In 1971, Mr. Gibson entered into contract negotiations with Manchester City Council, England to purchase his home from the local council. However, midway through negotiations the council withdrew from negotiations stating that the home was no longer for sale. Mr. Gibson however, took his case to court arguing that Manchester City Council had already made an unconditional offer to sell the house and that he had accepted. The case visits this important question of business practices and the law on the formation of contracts
