Scientists from many disciplines, most but not all of them biological, offer a broad reference for graduate and research pharmacologists, physiologists, biochemists, medical doctors, and food technologists. The original idea was to focus on seafood toxins, but cyanobacterial, or freshwater, toxins were included because of the many similarities between them, and because marine species living close to estuaries can be contaminated with toxins generated upstream. The sections cover general considerations; the epidemiological impact of toxic episodes; paralytic shellfish poisoning; enteric toxic episodes: DSP toxins, pecteno, and yessotoxins; amnesic toxic episodes; non-PSP neurotoxic episodes; palytoxin; freshwater toxins; new toxins and drugs; and economical considerations regarding toxic episodes.
