Summary Jacques Viger's manuscript fills a void in French-Canadian lexicography at the start of the 19th century. Journalist, soldier, civil servant, "historiomane" and tireless archivist, Viger was the first mayor of Montreal as well as the first president of the Société Saint-Jean Baptiste. Canadian neology is the only lexicon we have from this period. Written after that of Père Potier, but long before a lexicographical tradition was established in Quebec, this manuscript is an authentic and unique testimony to the language of the early 19th century. Suzelle Blais is finally making accessible to linguists - and researchers from various disciplines - a document of the utmost importance for the history of French in Quebec
