Summary "Records the many instances of compulsory military service in the history of the United States, the 13 Original Colonies, and certain Old World Nations prior to the passage of the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940. All of the principal military recruitment Acts in United States federal history, covering the period from the passage of the first Resolution of the Continental Congress to the beginning of consideration of Selective Service legislation in 1940, are presented as appendices. Volume II of Special Monograph No. 1 is limited entirely to statutes of the 13 Colonies which legalized compulsion during that strongly traditional period of American heritage. The two volumes of this monograph contain the most complete collection of American Colonial and Federal Acts for raising armed forces in existence"--Foreword, Vol. 1, page iii/iv
