Summary Reports outcome of the project :Aboriginal English language and literacy development project (SATCC) 1994 : the English language and literacy of Aboriginal teenagers within remote and isolated desert communities; case studies seven remote communities in South Australia; findings included : socio-economic conditions impact on attendance levels and participation in education; community goals for learning English while maintaining traditional community language; overall literacy proficiency levels inadequate for progress to secondary education; English being taught as a second or foreign language in some communities; benefits of community involvement in schooling; inequities of educational service provision to remote communities; low staffing levels; makes recommendations based on linking education with cultural, social and economic activity, linking teacher education with student education, and linking staffing and resources with professional development and school planning; proposes post graduate awards in remote area teaching; proposes strategies for strengthening community involvement in formal education
