Cases Summary The research methods case described in this study is informed by the lead researcher's experience of conducting qualitative research involving individuals with severe and persistent mental disorders in Ethiopia. The study, conducted from 2012 to 2016, explored the barriers to accessing mental health care as experienced by those who are among the most vulnerable, underrepresented, and stigmatized segments of the society: individuals with severe mental disorders and their caregivers in rural Ethiopia. Little is known about the ethical challenges experienced by health service researchers in low-income settings who are working with vulnerable groups, such as people who lack the capacity to consent. This has likely resulted in their voices going unheard from research and, consequently, from being underrepresented in the broader discussion of the development, dissemination, and implementation of interventions for individuals with severe mental disorders. This highlights the need for finding ways to enhance narrative integrity of individuals with severe mental disorders and ensure their agency in research. This case study reports evidence from a researchers' first-hand experience of conducting research that involved individuals with severe mental disorders and their caregivers.
