Summary The story of five sisters and their mysterious existence growing up in the 1970s. The story begins when 13-year-old Cecilia Lisbon is in hospital, following a failed suicide attempt. We watch as Cecilia's parents try to make sense of their youngest daughter's act, and weakly attempt to reorganise their home and family life accordingly. The reaction from Cecilia's four sisters is enigmatic as the sisters pass the time lying on the lawn in front of their parent's house. When Mrs Lisbon decides that more social interaction will help the girls cope, Lux takes this opportunity to flirt with high school heart-throb Trip Fontaine. Following the homecoming dance, Lux is callously abandoned by Trip and the door of Mrs Lisbon's religious discipline slams shut, and the girls become prisoners in their own home, at least until the tragic finale
