Summary |
Governments in Australia, as elsewhere, play a key role in influencing our living standards and the achievement of other national goals. Expenditures by government are the most evident means by which they exert this influence. Governments also influence behaviour through public enterprises, taxation, public debt, regulation and suasion. This present paper focuses on general government expenditures. The study provides comparisons of Australian public expenditure with that of other nations, as well as documenting changes within Australia in patterns of government expenditure over time. It also outlines the budget processes of Commonwealth, State and local governments, in order to assist in understanding the present "state of play". Additional avenues for forming expenditure decisions are also discussed. Finally, the study provides new survey information on citizens' preferences for public expenditure levels and their allocation in Australia. The results of this research are used to document the degree of satisfaction that citizens have with government expenditures in Australia. it / Brent Davis |
