Contents The Structural Situation of the Ego -- The Developmental Stages of the Ego
Summary "This paper is divided into two main parts. The first part deals with the structural situation of the ego. It compares Fairbairn's scheme of multiple egos and multiple objects with Freud's scheme of id, ego, and superego. The second part deals with the developmental stages of the ego. It compares Fairbairn's views on the maturation of the ego's object-relations with Freud's views on psychosexual progression through the oral, anal, and genital stages. In both of these main parts of the paper, the first section is intended to clarify the issues which are subsequently discussed; the second section presents Freud's views on these issues; the third section presents Fairbairn's views; and the fourth section summarizes the differences between them"--Introduction.
