The ultimate challenge is to raise these animals and then successfully return them to the wild.Zoologist Martin Hughes-Games visits projects all over the world - from outback Australia to the savannahs of East Africa, from local zoo breeding programs to relocation in the Amazonian region of Brazil.In the first episode, Martin visits the Chengdu Panda Base in China, where giant panda breeding is being taken to new levels. He also follows the hard-won battles of keepers at Jersey Zoo as they try to breed the most threatened primate in South America, the pied tamarin. In the Brazilian rainforest, he sees first-hand the habitat destruction threatening this tiny, intelligent monkey. Back in Jersey, he helps to hand-raise tamarin twins rejected by their mother. At Whipsnade Zoo he visits an Asian one-horned rhino that is coming to the end of an epic 16 months pregnancy.
