Summary Since the mid-1980s Mexico has carried out an economic adjustment and structural reform process, aimed at achieving sustainable economic growth. However, by end-1994 a growing external current account deficit developed into a foreign exchange crisis and a collapse of the banking system as capital flows suddenly reversed; subsequently, economic activity was disrupted and output declined precipitously
