Summary |
The Girl Who Cries Blood follows the story of a family's desperate search for a cure for their daughter's mysterious and unique illness. Twinkle, a thirteen-year-old-girl from the northern Indian city of Lucknow, suffers from a frightening and as yet un-diagnosed condition. For nearly two years, without any obvious explanation, she has cried tears of blood. But Twinkle's bleeding episodes aren't just restricted to her eyes. The spontaneous bleeding, which happens almost daily, also comes from her head, hands and feet. Twinkle's neighbours and local devotees of the Goddess Kali think she's possessed - that she's become the host of a restless spirit that's drinking her blood. But could this life-threatening condition actually be a blessing?During the documentary, follow Twinkle and her mother's journey to conclusively show why Twinkle bleeds. Their journey of discovery straddles the mystical and the medical. It pitches a belief in spiritual and religious rituals against hard medical science - both conventional and complementary. From the sacred banks of the river Ganges to the hi-tech laboratories of Mumbai we will see Twinkle bleeding freely from her eyes, hands and head. Witnessed by experts and scrutinised in detail, Twinkle's multidisciplinary investigation edges us closer to some uncomfortable truths. Is she blessed... or is she possessed? Does she have a chronic illness that will rewrite medicine's understanding of the pathology of blood? Or is she the victim of abuse?PRODUCTION DETAILS:ZIG ZAG PRODUCTIONS |
