"After a hundred and fifty years of efforts at constructing rules to govern international monetary relations, exchange-rate stability, combined with a good macroeconomic performance, continues to be as elusive as ever. Understanding the history of these international monetary systems is important for two reasons. One is that there are significant and probably inescapable continuities between them; the other, that 'the lessons of history' have to be handled with care, since past experience shows how often they have been misused in the design and implementation of such arrangements. In this book, a distinguished group of economists and economic historians offer new insights into the working of the most important experiences in this field.
