Summary Online participant panels have grown in popularity in recent years. Online panels are used to assist especially with surveys or experimental data collection. No matter the popularity and the benefits these offer (quick/efficient data collection, reaching particular populations easily), challenges still remain. These challenges relate to issues of participant quality or the validity of the collected data. In this example, an online panel was used to support data collection for a doctoral research project. The case study details the process followed to collaborate with the research agency and collect the data. The process includes multiple stages of both pilot tests (to ensure the ecological validity of measurements) and waves of quantitative data collection that can assist with quality checking through the process. Overall, trust toward the processes of the online panel agency and research industry in general along with confidence in the use of this popular type of data collection are the key lessons learned from the use of online panels
