Summary |
The Maghreb and especially Moroccan musical repertoires have long held fascination for jazzmen. This is the case for the pianist Randy Weston and the saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, who have both recorded remarkable over the years with Gnawa brotherhoods. Events such as the Essaouira festival which, in normal times, is a must for many rockers and improvisers in search of intense cultural exchange. One such is the Casablancan singer Oum, who concocts a delicate mix of oriental tradition, electro and jazz. For this concert at the Moods Club in Zurich, the Saharawi descendant (her ancestors came from Mauritania) revisits various extracts from her discography. For example, "Yabhar" advocates ecology and in particular the preservation of the oceans. "Laji" confirms her humanist outlook with her message of solidarity towards immigrant populations. Being an artist who is open to multiple collaborations (she recorded the impeccable "Africa Is The Future" with the Ghanaian rapper Blitz The Ambassador), Oum is joined here by inspired musicians including Yacir Rami and the Cuban Damian Nueva, a double-bassist seen in the television series The Eddy and author of Orisun, a very promising debut album.
