Summary This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson chats with 'Mr Clean-Up Australia' Ian Kiernan. As a young chap, Ian Kiernan threw rubbish out of cars and off the back of his boat. As he tells Talking Heads, he had no great desire to save the environment. The tremendous success of Clean-Up Australia Day and Clean-Up the World Day came much later. Initially the driven young builder and property developer set himself a goal of owning 500 houses. Wealth was his goal. He was a tough nut in a tough game, with an equally focused dog by his side, ready to ward off any ne'er-do-well wanting to issue a death threat or two.Kiernan's journey is that of a man who transformed his own values, and then set to work on the rest of us! The Clean-Up campaign has spread to more than 100 countries and now attracts millions of volunteers. Kiernan says he is driven by a fear of failure, but he just seems to love a big project, whether it is property development, single-handed ocean racing or starting Clean-Up Australia Day. His latest project would involve fishing fleets skimming the world's oceans for rubbish. "There are a number of places around the world where equatorial currents, or currents and wind directions capture all of this floating rubbish and keep it in one location. If we can raise major money - major, major money - we could then commission these fleets to go and fish for the plastic and remove it. Is that a modest goal?"PRODUCTION DETAILS:Talking Heads is produced by ABC TV. Executive Producer: Margot Phillipson; Series Producer: Daniel Cooper
