Summary *Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that the following program may contain images and voices of people who have died*In the 1950s and 60s cars became integral to every aspect of our lives. Most parents experienced the world through the windscreen and most kids watched it go by from the back seat upon which many of them were spawned. By the 1960s the baby boomers couldn't drive as fast as their hero, racing car champion Jack Brabham, but they felt like they could.Cars were also part of our identity. Comedian Vince Sorrenti decked his car out as a boudoir to attract the ladies.Entertainer Jean Kittson is a second generation rev head. Her father was a mechanic, which meant she had no trouble getting four wheels of her own. Cars helped liberate many women. We were still building many roads in the post-war period, and our champion road maker was Len Beadel, a former Burwood boy scout turned surveyor. He first went bush to make roads for the rocket testing range at Woomera. He was so good at it that he just kept going, building an estimated 6,000 kilometres of roads in all.Once Len had built the roads - the hoons were ready to race on them. The Redex Rally went round Australia in the mid 1950s, and introduced a new set of rogues to the Australian public. The on-going competition between Holden and Ford attained a new level of intensity with the release of the Monaro. Ford retaliated with the launch of a machine that sounded like a wild beast when it idled- the GTHO. The Bathurst 500 gave everyone a chance to strut their stuff, including the Japanese imports.PRODUCTION DETAILS:Bombora Film and Music Co produced and directed by Paul Clarke
