Summary Dateline presents this landmark documentary to commemorate the Lockerbie Bombing. On the 21st December 1988 Pan American World Airways Flight 103 broke apart in the skies over Scotland, reigning fire and death onto a small town. Its name was Lockerbie. All 259 people on board the Boeing 747 were killed, as were 11 local people on the ground. On the flight were 189 Americans, and among their number were 35 students from a Syracuse University study abroad program. But this was no accident - a bomb had been planted in the luggage hold, which ripped the plane apart at 31,000 feet scattering the debris over 845 square miles. The Lockerbie disaster would be the deadliest terrorist attack on US civilians until September the 11th 2001.We meet the local residents who were there on the ground that fateful night, as well as the emergency service personnel who would face the most difficult day of their careers. With unique access to the original news footage, much of which has never been seen before, we piece the story of the Lockerbie disaster together in a way never seen before. We also meet some of those on-board of Pan Am 103 through the memories of their loved ones - we hear from four families about their sons, daughters and fathers. This was a human tragedy on an unimaginable scale and those left behind will bear their emotional scars forever. This is a definitive account of what happened that night, and what unfolded over the next few days, combining powerful eyewitness testimony and unique archive footage to tell a story that should be remembered.
