Summary |
This reader is intended by editors Goode (State U. of New York at Stony Brook) and Vail (Willamette U.) to serve as a supplementary text in undergraduate courses in the sociology or psychology of deviance. The reader focuses on extreme or secondary deviance, those deviations that cause the group or society to stigmatize and isolate the normative violator. The reader is organized into seven section of three or four reading each, covering tattooing and body modification, belief in alien abduction, obesity, white supremacists, having and endorsing adult-child sexual contact, the environmentalist group Earth First!, and sexual sado-masochism. The readings combine traditional academic perspectives and, often, first-person accounts from the deviants themselves |
