Notes W. T. FRANKENBERGER, JR. is a Professor of Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry in the Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. Focusing his research activities on both microbial production of phytohormones and the bioremediation of soils contaminated with trace elements, Dr. Frankenberger is the author or coauthor of over 150 refereed technical journal and review articles, book chapters, and technical reports as well as the holder of a U.S. patent on a process for the biological deselenification of soils and sediments, and coeditor (with Sally Benson) of Selenium in the Environment (Marcel Dekker, Inc.). He is a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America, the American Society of Agronomy, the American Academy of Microbiology, the American Institute of Chemists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the American Society for Microbiology and the American Chemical Society, among others. Dr. Frankenberger received the B.A. degree (1974) in biology from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, and the M.S. (1977) and Ph.D. (1980) degrees in soil microbiology and biochemistry from Iowa State University, Ames., MUHAMMAD ARSHAD is an Assistant Professor of Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. The author or coauthor of over 30 professional publications, Dr. Arshad is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the Pakistan Society for the Advancement of Agricultural Sciences, the Soil Science Society of Pakistan, and the Pakistan Botanical Society, among others. He received the B.Sc. degree (1977) in agriculture and the M.Sc. degree (1980) in soil science from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan, and the Ph.D. degree (1990) in soil microbiology and biochemistry from the University of California, Riverside
