Summary
Annotation Patterns of marriage, childbearing, and mortality are not shaped by economic factors alone, says McQuillan (sociology, U. of Western Ontario), then goes on to explore the influence of religious and cultural identity on social and demographic behavior. Focusing on five communities, he argues that theological differences between the two groups did not necessarily lead to differences in demographic behavior, but religious affiliation became a central element of social identity
