Summary |
With Donald Trump nominated as the official Republican candidate for America’s presidency and the US approaching the most acrimonious presidential elections in years, Panorama visits the racially divided oil town of Bakersfield in California. Here there is widespread support for Trump's promises to kick out 11 million illegal immigrants and build a wall along the entire US border with Mexico. There is also backing for his call for a ban on Muslims travelling to the US. This close focus film on one American town looks at the vision Trump's supporters have for a return to "the old America", in which their way of life is not threatened, as they see it, by other ethnic groups. But the anger goes both ways, and the town's large Hispanic population and its African Americans and Muslims are outraged that they are being made to feel hated in their own country. Panorama talks to those who fear what a Trump White House would mean for them and looks at why America is so angry |
