Summary |
But what really happened that night in the tiny Redfern community ... and what lay behind it all? Reporter Liz Jackson looks at the catalyst of the riot, the death of 17-year-old Thomas 'TJ' Hickey, and how his death has been presented by both the Aboriginal community and the police. Were police in hot pursuit of TJ, as many locals claim? Or did they pay him no attention until after his accident, as senior police insist? Through interviews with people who claim to have seen the key events - some of them speaking publicly for the first time - Liz Jackson pieces together that turbulent day and night in Redfern. Jackson also digs into the deeper causes of the riot to find out there had been direct warnings of serious trouble. Drugs and drug-related crime were spiralling out of control: 1 million needles were distributed in Redfern in a single year. Women feared walking the streets |
