Summary |
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities, also known as learning or cognitive disabilities, have had to fight for their rights in many different areas. Some people with intellectual and developmental disabilities call themselves "self-advocates" and identify as part of the self-advocacy movement. This research study sought to define and expand the concept of sexual self-advocacy, drawing on the experiences and insights of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through the use of the nominal group technique, a group process method, the research team found that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities understood sexual self-advocacy in a variety of ways and observed instances of participants enacting their own sexual self-advocacy during the study. Nominal group technique is put forth as an accessible method that is useful for capturing a large amount of data from a group in a short amount of time |
