Summary In 1971 two Danish school teachers, Soren Hansen and Jesper Jensen published the Little Red Schoolbook resulting in international outrage. Many countries, including Australia, attempted to ban its publication. Why was an innocuous-looking book the subject of such controversy? This documentary looks at how conservative society was in the seventies and examines the repressive censorship laws that existed in Australia at that time. The Book That Shook the World shows how change was brought about by the actions of people willing to risk gaol for their anti-censorship beliefs. The documentary traces the change and development of censorship laws and attitudes in Australia. At the same time, The Book That Shook the World looks at the cultural hypocrisies Australians were living under, and the sometimes hilarious lengths authorities went to, to prevent change, while others tried to bring change about.Writer and director, Con Anemogiannis says that when he was working on the program, people of a certain age had similar stories about the Little Red Schoolbook. "They all said 'I remember that my Mum or Dad bought it and hid it in the cupboard. I wasn't sure if it was to hide it from me, or left there deliberately for me to find'."Among those interviewed in The Book That Shook the World are the authors of the Little Red Schoolbook, Hansen and Jensen, journalist Wendy Bacon, author Frank Moorhouse and historian Keith Windschuttle. The Book That Shook the World features a mix of interviews with experts and participants of the time inter-cut with newsreel footage, archival films and publications that reveal what Australian society looked and sounded like. The Book That Shook the World asks "how far has Australian society come?" Has Australian society really progressed since the 1970s? Or are we, at the beginning of the 21st century, a more conservative society? (From Australia, in English) (Documentary)
