Summary |
Described by George French Angas in 1844 as "truly a wild and desolate place", the Coorong is undeniably one of the most magnificent areas in Australia. But hand-in-hand with the remote beauty of the region went a series of tragic events in the 19th century. Shipwrecks, murders, attacks by the Aboriginal inhabitants on the white explorers and settlers, and attacks by white colonists on the Aborigines also made the Coorong one of the most violent regions of the South Australian colony. Drawing mostly on original sources, this book provides an insight into the sometimes harsh and desperate conditions faced by the Europeans attempting to populate "that lonely shore", and the inevitable conflicts with the original inhabitants |
