| Summary |
The third and final part of the series on Joseph Stalin focuses on his desperately cruel and despotic rule. Stalin could tolerate no other leaders and systematically liquidated anyone he thought was a potential threat to his authority. Stalin even saw a rival in the Russian Orthodox Church and had churches blown up, valuable icons destroyed and priests removed from office. But it was not only people in positions of authority who were oppressed or killed. Stalin's ambitious schemes for industrialising the country were paid for by the sale of Soviet grain abroad. This program demonstrates amply how the dictator had no scruples in confiscating the grain from the oppressed peasants, leaving them to starve. As opposition to the reign of terror built up, labour camps were built in which dissidents and protesters were incarcerated in inhumane conditions and forced to work on mammoth building programs. The last targets of Stalin's vicious pogroms were artists, intellectuals and Jews. (From Germany, in Russian and German, English subtitles) |
