This case study is based on my experiences with conducting interviews and surveys with women who had an outpatient sterilization procedure at a public clinic in southeast Texas. The issues raised here address some factors needed for planning clinical research, thinking about inter-personal relationships among various levels of staff and patients, and the connections between research and larger, state-level political decisions
