Summary |
"Glasgow is Scotland's second oldest university - this volume traces its history from the foundation to the present. This books shows how the College of Glasgow developed during the turbulent years of the seventeenth century and in the next century became a notable centre of learning, attracting by 1800 almost as many students as Oxford or Cambridge. In 1870 the University abandoned the Old College in the city centre and moved to palatial Gothic buildings in the west end. From the time of the move the history is told in five thematic chapters which cover the buildings, student life, teaching, research, and the government of the University. The book is packed with fascinating glimpses into the University's past and provides a useful guide for visitors to the main campus with its impressive buildings. Finally the Principal Sir Graeme Davies expounds his vision for the future."--Jacket |
