"Glasgow is Scotland's second oldest university - this volume traces its history from the foundation to the present. This books shows how the College of Glasgow developed during the turbulent years of the seventeenth century and in the next century became a notable centre of learning, attracting by 1800 almost as many students as Oxford or Cambridge. In 1870 the University abandoned the Old College in the city centre and moved to palatial Gothic buildings in the west end.
