Summary On January 19, 1981, just two and a half months before her twenty-third birthday, Francesca Woodman jumped out of a window in Lower Manhattan, ending her career as a photographer that was as extraordinary as it was short. This book is the first comprehensive survey of her enigmatic, haunting, eerily beautiful work. Woodman began taking photographs seriously at the age of thirteen or fourteen, accumulating a cohesive body of work until her premature death. Francesca Woodman started using and scrutinizing her body in her own photographs long before this became fashionable. Her images are evidence of her intense relationship with her camera and her self, a keen awareness of their mutual interdependence. Woodman staged unsettling scenes imbued with a sense of impalpable existential peril, set in surreal spaces. This volume containing many unpublished photographs allows you to discover the whole range of her work, created in Rhode Island, Rome, New York, and MacDowell Colony, New Hampshire. In the context of current tendencies in art, Woodman's legacy seems as acute, timely, and intense as ever
