Notes |
âThe fifteen Australian aboriginal legends in this book come from the now extinct Dordenup tribe of south-western Australia, among the remnants of whom Dr. Buller-Murphy spent her girlhood. In addition to the legends written around individuals such as Bindatan, Edareet, and Ningararna, there are stories associated with places in the area such as Meekadarriby, Margaret River and Old Man Rock; legends about flowers (the hovea and coral creeper); about great events like an earthquake; a boomerang legend, and many others. There is a simplicity and sometimes a grimness about them which recalls the legends of the northern hemisphere, giving them an authentic folklore flavour which is usually absent from the âfairy talesâ foisted on the younger generation by many well-meaning writers of childrenâs books. The drawings by Elizabeth Durack catch the spirit of the legends and greatly enliven the narrative. Her understanding of the aborigines is revealed in every line.â (From dust jacket) |
