Summary |
Those unfamiliar with Anatolian music or with this unique group, born more than 20 years ago in the bustling city of Istanbul, should prepare themselves for a 2-hour musical dream. Wearing folkish get-up, their traditional instruments (saz, darbouka, davul) as well as customised oud and drum kit (a small vintage effects machine is hidden inside), Baba Zula certainly has a theatrical feel. We hear long, maqam style introductions (typical music from Asia Minor and the Near East), music that draws its energy and inspiration from this unique geographical point, the bridge between East and West, between two continents and worlds that some see as irreconcilable. Yet, before an audience here at this small Zurich club, the power of music as a uniting cultural force in the face of geopolitics is clear for all to see. This group's concerts are veritable kaleidoscopes of sonic trance. Their music is built on improvisation with traditional roots that branch out into rock and psychedelic effects (distortion, wah-wah, echo). (revèrb ...). The tracks are elastic, often bordering on 10 minutes and mark a nod to 70's Turkish pop that was considered old-fashioned yesterday and now feels rejuvenated by the electric oud or saz flights that are worthy of western guitar heroes. Whether through a nimble darbouka or a twirling ney, we are transported to the banks of the Bosphorus with Baba Zula in the driving seat. Julien D |
