In the days before books came into general use people learned their history the easy way, by anecdote. To meticulous scholars this wasn't the best way. Often dates got mixed up and facts became enlarged or obscured. but the essential element, the truth about people, was seldom lost; for the anecdote immortalized persons. What follows might be called the significant anecodtes from a particular segment of American history -- that of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in America during the past hundred years. The stories do not give a chronicle of outward achievement. Rather do they epitomize the character and contribution of those Sisters who seem most to typify the many and diverse personalities whose lives have gone into the making of our Communitie's history.
