Summary |
KoKe is an Indonesian company that pioneered the transformation of defective coffee beans into handcrafted products by empowering elderly rural and unemployed women. It was established in the province of Yogyakarta, which is located on the Indonesian island of Java. Unfortunately, competitors may readily imitate these handcrafted products, and then use predatory pricing to seize KoKe's market share. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an abrupt decline in demand for these handcrafted products. To survive, KoKe creates derivative products from the defective coffee bean extracts that customers genuinely require in the event of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a contract manufacturing arrangement, large factories are involved in the production of these new products, lowering KoKe's social impact on its female workers. The case examines in detail the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak on KoKe's three major plans, namely the expansion to the international market, the promotion of KoKe products as authentic Yogyakarta souvenirs, and engagement with the government's Archipelago Coffee Program |
