The subject social studies was first developed in 1941 to combine elements of history, geography and civics as allied, inter-related branches of social matter. It appeals to children for various reasons as it deals with life, with people and animals which children love to learn about. Probably the biggest appeal of the subject is its opportunity for activity of varied nature. It is no longer merely a body of subject knowledge to be transmitted and assimilated. It is part of the school curriculum involved with the child's living and doing, with its experiences and its development.
